Marie Woo, a Seattle native, studied ceramics with Maija Grotell at Cranbrook in the 50’s. She taught at U of Michigan, Ann Arbor, U of Washington, Seattle and Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.
Her personal style emanates from a lifetime journey in search of the medium’s elusive intrinsic aesthetic. Clay and fire tune her to harmony and balance of the Tao on her relentless quest for expression.

Woo has received KRESGE EMINENT ARTIST AWARD, LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD / Michigan Ceramic Art Association, GOLD MEDAL AWARD / Detroit Scarab Club, ASIAN CULTURAL COUNCIL GRANT / Rockefeller Foundation, MICHIGAN ARTS FOUNDATION AWARD, several ANNUAL MICHIGAN COUNCIL EXHIBITION AWARDS, and HORACE RACKHAM TRAVELING RESEARCH GRANT.
Having spent ten years traveling and documenting traditional Chinese ceramic, her research culminated in the Chinese Folk Pottery Exhibition at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor that included a symposium with speakers from China, and films. It was a national traveling exhibition (2013-19) and ceramic pieces were donated to the Freer Sackler Museum, Washington, D.C., Alfred Art Museum, N.Y. Michigan State
University, the University of Michigan Art Museum, Ann Arbor.
